Santa Maria is a town of true contrasts, with cobbled streets and dirt tracks, modern buildings and decayed ruins, with lots of character. It has some good bars and restaurants. In the evening, locals congregate to enjoy the seemingly random live music, which may or may not occur at one of the nearby bars. Music is very important in Cape Verdean culture, and well worth sampling if you get the chance.
